Salta...the Beautiful!

Salta is usually the starting point for trips to other attractive destinations in the argentine northwest.
However, this beautiful city holds many interesting attractions itself!

San Francisco Saint Francis Church
Located at 3900 ft above sea level, Salta is a perfect example of how modernity and tradition can harmoniously coexist. Founded in 1582, Salta has some of the best kept and most representative buildings from the colonial architectural style.
As it is common in Argentina, public life takes place around the Plaza 9 de Julio, where most of the most interesting buildings

in town can be found, including the Townhall (Cabildo), the Cathedral and the High Mountain Museum, as well as a broad offer of restaurants and coffee-shops. Also close to the plaza is the San Francisco church; a wonderful example of colonial architectural style that has been recently restored and is definitely worth a visit.

One of the main attractions in Salta is the Cerro San Bernardo, from where a superb view of the city and its surroundings can be enjoyed. A cable car starting from Plaza San Martin can be used to get to the top, or you can try walking up

the 1021 stairs on the south slope. On the top of the hill there is a cute park, with lots of diverse vegetation, small artificial waterfalls, a playing ground for kids, and -of course- a wonderful view point where the most fantastic views of the city and its surroundings can be enjoyed.

A trip to Salta will never be complete without a visit to the traditional "peñas". These are a kind of small restaurants where typical food from the region is served and traditional, local music (folklore) is performed. In Salta, most of the peñas can be found near the train station area…and they are definitely an experience!
