Bewitching Iruya

Located in the argentine province of Salta, 27 miles north of Humahuaca, Iruya is an invitation to rest and relax.
Situated on the slope of a plateau, at 9120 ft above sea level, this little northern town seems to be "clinging to the mountain" or, as locals say, "hanging from the sky".

To reach Iruya, one must cross the "Abra del Cóndor" pass at 13,120ft, which marks the border between Jujuy and Salta provinces. The remaining 16 miles will be done on an unpaved, mountain road. Along the journey, the astonishing landscapes -where herds of sheep, goats and llamas can occasionally be seen- slowly announce the quiet charm that is waiting in this little town stopped in time.

Some Lucerne and poplar tree plantations can also be seen along the Road 133. Finally, the church tower announces the arrival to Iruya, and the first impression is that time does not count here. Everything seems to be as it was 200 years ago. The little adobe constructions, the narrow and sloped cobblestone streets, the quietness and kindness of the very few locals…everything contributes to an overwhelming feeling of peace and calmness that invades every single visitor.
No doubt: Iruya is bewitching!
