La Boca - A Must See in Buenos Aires!

With its colorful houses, strong connection with Tango and football, the beauty of Quinquela Martin's art and its strong personality and heritage, La Boca confronts visitors with one of Buenos Aires' different faces.

The most distinguishing feature from La Boca is its colorful look, with
each house painted in four or five different bright colors.

The origin of this -now picturesque- color explosion, however, goes back to fully functional reasons. As Italian immigrants settled in this area around 1900, they certainly couldn't afford buying paint for their houses, so they simply asked the port authorities for the paint that was left after painting ships. Of course, there was never enough paint from a same color to complete a house facade, and that is why houses in La Boca show such a bright combination of oranges and yellows mixed with blue and red. As you can see, sometimes the best things simply happen by chance!

The most famous street -and tourist attraction- in La Boca is Caminito, [ ]

which not only presents visitors with a perfect example of La Boca colorful identity, but also holds a strong connection with the origins of Tango and its melancholy. It is not rare to find several Tango dancer couples at Caminito, entertaining tourists with their sensual moves. The strong relationship between Tango and this emblematic street in La Boca is reflected in the lyrics of the famous Tango: "Caminito", where the abandoned lover goes back to his beloved Caminito to cry his sorrows.

Just a few blocks away from Caminito is the Quinquela Martin museum, which holds the biggest collection of this artist's work in all Argentina.
Benito Quinquela Martin was born in La Boca and dedicated his life to reflect in his paintings the everyday life and work of La Boca inhabitants. He worked with the spatula technique and created true masterpieces that beautifully show the soul and heart of this Buenos Aires neighborhood.

Last but not least, you cannot leave La Boca without visiting "La Bombonera", [ ] Boca Junior's stadium. Diego Maradona's favorite football club is also the most popular one in Argentina, and their Stadium's shape resembles a bonbon-box, hence the nickname. Boca Juniors' fans claim that when their team comes out to the field, other stadiums "tremble" but La Bombonera "beats" (like a heart). Think they exaggerate? Check out for your self on your next trip to La Boca!
